Reservations

I've been a bit negative of late, regarding Serenity/Firefly.

And that's not likely to change.

I still think Universal is exploiting the fans with the HD-DVD release.

And I have serious reservations about this June 23rd 'Serenity Day' thing. Apparently we're all supposed to go out and buy copies of the DVD on that day to make Universal notice the fan base (or something).

The original plans for June 23rd were good - charity screenings of the BDM to benefit Equality Now. That's something that should be pursued, it's a worthwile effort.

Giving more $$$ to Universal is... less of one, in my opinion.

I just don't think that the fans should be expected to bankroll another movie. There is obviously not enough demand for a sequel. If it takes existing fans buying multiple copies in order to make an impression, what would the box office for a sequel look like? Likely worse than for Serenity.

Another misgiving is related to the fact that a lot of the long time Browncoats don't seem to be involved (judging by the threads on fff.net, anyway). I love how many new fans there are, but with a few exceptions, there's not a lot of enthusiasm from the older Browncoats. I don't really want to post this on my flylog since I'll likely get pretty flamed.

Don't get me wrong, I love Firefly and Serenity and the cast and everything related to the 'verse.

But maybe it's time to let it go.

Why is everyone puting the June 23rd stuff in their sigs on Firefly sites? It's annoying.

Serenity on HD-DVD

Serenity is going to be Universal's first release on the HD-DVD format (it was intially included among a first 10 list released not too long ago).

Am I the only one thinking that they're capitalizing on the fact that there are a lot of fans who will buy anything with Serenity on it regardless of whether they can actually use it?

Foreign DVDs are one thing - at least those can be played on a region-free player (or player that's been ...altered... to be region free. And the foreign release had extras that region 1 did not.

But $25 (at least) for a DVD that is just a pretty box containing an expensive frisbee? (and it has the SAME cover art!)

I'm not sure that Universal has faith in the 'verse so much as faith in the Browncoats willingness to buy stuff related to it.

BSG & Earth

I was rewatching season one in anticipation of the premiere of season two last week (we're a bit behind here) and I started thinking about the "thirteenth colony." The fleet is headed towards Earth because the cylons have destroyed their homeworlds (or rather, bombed the heck out of them and are now hanging around for some reason - Caprica, at least, remains intact, though full of radiation).

The fleet is also aware, however, that there are cylon agents hidden among them.

Not a problem for Cmdr. Adama - he doesn't actually know where Earth is. But President Roslin believes she is destined to lead the survivors to Earth (and since they've already found Kobol, it's conceivable she's right). She never considers though, that she will also lead the cylons to Earth. Real smart.

Now I know there aren't a lot of options for the fleet - they will likely have to settle somewhere eventually, but shouldn't Roslin consider that she risks destroying the last colony if the cylons aren't removed from the fleet first?

Second, if the fleet does make it to Earth, what will it be like? Is it 'our' Earth? An 'alternate' Earth? If it is 'our' Earth will it be the present? Or will it be Earth 1000 years ago? Or 1000 years from now?

Assuming that in the BSG 'verse, Earth does exist.

Just something I was thinking about.

Wacky theory #1

But - it's wacky theory time.

I think Adama is a cylon. Zak Adama.

Isn't he dead?

Well, yes he is. But - we don't know where the cylons get their physical features from. Is it just random, or were they based on the likenesses of actual people? If they were based on actual people, they may also have been based on living persons. And here's where it gets tricky. Do the cylons just copy a persons' form and leave the 'original' alone? Or do they kill the original to ensure no one discovers the discrepency?

Or are they using the likenesses (and even personalities) of those who have died. A twisted form of identity theft.

Or maybe I just want to see the inevitable Lee/Kara/Zak triangle play out along with all the Adama family baggage.

So there is wacky theory #1: Zak Adama is a cylon.

Still working on it. Blog under construction - searching for the right quotes, polishing up the first major posting. Or rather writing the first one. Actually, researching is more appropriate.

First up will be BSG - the whole "Adama is a cylon" issue.

So a bit of a revise as to what this blog will be all about. I'm dropping the politics and real-life stuff. No one cares about that. This is going to be a sci-fi blog. Listen to news I scrounge from various sites. Listen to me gush about Firefly/Serenity (it's trailer day!), listen to my conspiracy theories of the new Galactica (why does everyone assume "Adama's a cylon" means the Commander? Or Lee for that matter...). Listen (or I guess it would be read or watch..) to me rant about Stargate (at what point is it no longer SG-1?) So that's it, all sci-fi, all the time.

Hello and welcome to this blog. Thank you for stopping by! Please pull up a chair and enjoy the assorted rantings of me. This blog will include my thoughts on two things of great interest to me - politics and science fiction. Since I no longer have anywhere to disect and analyze my favourite sci-fi shows/books/movies I decided a blog would do just the trick! Coming soon will be assorted thoughts on the new Battlestar Galactica (who is a cylon?), Firefly/Serenity (5 months 'til the BDM!), Stargate SG-1 (and my quickly fading interest in it), and others as time and interest allows.

As for politics - Canadian politics looks to be getting quite interesting. Snap elections, fraud, publication bans, all make for some great debate!
